tribes which are known to be the most powerful of them all which
were the Mayans. Lencas inhabited the western-central part of
Honduras. Christopher Columbus first saw Honduran soil on July 30,
1502 and it was at that time that he claimed the territory. Columbus
claimed the Honduran territory in the names of his sovereigns which

deep water off the coast. The Spanish however, called the country
two other names as well which were Guaymuras and Higueras. Honduras was excited to gain its
independence from Spain in 1821. The country was then annexed to the
Mexican Empire but only for short time.
