Columbus claimed the Honduran territory in the names of his sovereigns which are Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castile. Honduras means "depths" which is why Columbus named the country Honduras due to the deep water off the coast. The Spanish however, called the country two other names as well which were Guaymuras and Higueras. Honduras was excited to gain its independence from Spain in 1821. The country was then annexed to the Mexican Empire but only for short time.
